Drinking In The Park is pleased to announce it has been swallowed by Talkhole.
That’s what Neil and Johnny first said when they found out that Canada’s Best Comedy Podcast Network had welcomed Drinking In The Park to the hilarious Talkhole network (home to the super funny Forever Young with Dean Young, Rude Dudes and Date Fail, just to name a few.)
Network founder Dean Young was kind enough to sit down recently (and by sit down we mean Neil emailed Dean a bunch of questions) and tell Drinking In The Park listeners more about Talkhole.
Why is Talkhole like radio but awesome? Is it the hosts, the guests, the unfiltered/censored nature of podcasts?
I think for me, podcasting is a return to what radio was. Unfiltered, free form radio. All of our shows have a specific format, but our content is first and foremost host-driven. Not packaged down and designed to drive traffic to the advertisers. I’ve spent the last decade in satellite and terrestrial radio, so for me Talkhole was about taking a pure form of radio (which I love) and marrying it with my life in comedy. When I’m on the air on regular radio or even satellite, you only have so much time to talk, and everything is very much done within a specific template. Talkhole is about having that freedom, its filterless and it’s expressive. And yes, you can also say fuck. Suck it CRTC!
Why does Talkhole fill a ‘hole’ in the Canadian comedy podcast market?
Our idea was to create Canada’s answer to the U.S comedy pod networks like Feral, Nerdist, Earwolf. We saw an opportunity to create this thing that we didn’t quite have here.
Just how excited are you to have Drinking In The Park join the network?
Excited enough to literally go drinking in a park. Its our right as Canadians, really. Drinking in a park. We wait all year for it. So let’s not waste any time! Plus you guys bring a really weird flavor and a unique sound to the airwaves. And your artwork is awesome – we want people to listen with their eyes too! Its the internet, so its visual.
Do you think Johnny is too mean to Neil or does Neil just not fully appreciate Johnny’s ‘friendship’?
Not at all! Whenever I fill in on “Ward & Al” on Sirius, Allison Dore infamously loves to lay the verbal spurs to me. And if you ever listen to the Rude Dudes on our network, they’re always busting my chops in the studio. Someone Tweeted us and said I’m their Glenn Humplik. I disagree, I’m their boss! But, I encourage a little abuse between hosts, to keep us all on our toes. Keep up that hustle!
Have you ever drank in the park? Don’t worry only people who have the Internet will know this info!
Well I guess I kind of gave that away earlier, but yes. I’ve drank in many a park. I’ve began and ended summer romances while drinking in a park. I’ve eaten pot cookies while drinking in a park. Big fan, big fan. I once had a homeless guy yell “get a room” while I was making out with a girlfriend while drinking in a park. Which was ironic on many levels. We were in his room, technically. Is that a horrible thing to say? I’m drinking in a park while I answer this.
What’s the best breakfast restaurant to go to after a night of theoretical drinking in the park? If your answer is The Starving Artist, you are correct.
Funny you should mention The Starving Artist, they’re a sponsor of ours and I also host a show at the College & Ossington location every Friday! They definitely do a damn fine brunch. Here in Toronto, I’m also a big fan of Aft Kitchen & BBQ. It’s a Southern BBQ joint in Leslieville, and it’s amazing.
What’s your favourite episode of Who’s the Boss?
I’m going to be honest with you. I was a pre-pubescent boy when Who’s The Boss was originally on, so I mostly just blanked out and stared at Alyssa Milano for 22 minutes at a time. I’d occasionally snap out of it and laugh on cue with the laugh track, just so my parents didn’t clue in that I was experiencing some of my first boners. But, the Tony catches Angela in the shower episode is their landmark episode really, isn’t it? Or is that just me referencing a Family Guy reference now. What’s happening??
Have you watched Doctor Who – if not isn’t Alyssa Milano great in it?
I have to be honest, I’ve never watched Dr Who. Although I’m a big fan of the creepy theme music. I was interested initially, because I assumed the show was just about an insane British guy who thinks he’s a wizard and goes around fighting garbage cans. Then I found out I was wrong about that, and nope. Just nope.
Fun Alyssa Milano fact, I had a life-sized cardboard cutout of her when I was 14, from the movie Poison Ivy. I was 14, so you can imagine the kind of relationship I had with that thing.
What other new shows are set to join the network? Could you tell us a bit about them?
We just launched a new show with Toronto comics Darren Springer and Nick Nemeroff called “Nick & Darren in Conversation”. Every week they interview each other, in character, and pretend the other host is away. Did I just spoiler alert the 4th wall down? Oh well. It’s a very fun show, and ridiculous.
We have a handful of pitches I’m working on with Canadian comics. Jeff Elliot is launching a new show this summer called “What’s That Like?” where he interviews guests about a bizarre job or life experience. Sort of a comedy version of “Dirty Jobs” with Mike Rowe… sorta. And Jeff has this great dry, deadpan delivery where he delivers these little quips that are so sharp.
We’re starting up a new ‘420 Friendly’ podcast at The Underground Comedy Club here in Toronto. And a few shows across Canada I’m checking out right now too. We also have a lot of live shows I’m producing in the Toronto area this summer too… we’re growing!
Be sure to tune into Talkhole every Friday for new episodes of Drinking In The Park !!!
